Spirituality - Wairuatanga
The taniwha with a paua shell eye is carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone) and sits enveloped within a polished paua shell mounted on a Kaiawa river stone carved with entwined koru. The paua and river stone reflect the spiritual connection of rivers and the sea to family, symbolised by the protection of the taniwha.
Kaiawa – Food from rivers and streams
Koru – Symbolises the unfurled sliver fern leaf, depicting new beginnings, growth and harmony. It represents nurturing and when entwined with others, embodies the strength and purity of loving family relationships.
Taniwha – Mythical creature said to live in the oceans and inland waters of New Zealand. It represents protector and guardian of kinsmen and family.
