The maripi (knife) has a double sided taniwha handle with a paua eye and is carved from New Zealand pounamu. It sits on a pounamu mount, setting it ahead of the Kaiawa river stone on which it sits, symbolising the head of the family. The stone is carved with entwined koru. The maripi is removable.

Kaiawa – Food from rivers and streams.

Koru – Symbolises the unfurled sliver fern leaf, depicting new beginnings, growth and harmony. It represents nurturing and when entwined with others, embodies the strength and purity of loving family relationships.

Taniwha – Mythical creature said to live in the oceans and inland waters of New Zealand. It represents protector and guardian of kinsmen and family.
