Pride – Whakahīhī

The taniwha is carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone) and rests within a deer horn inset with seven drops of pounamu backed with natural flax. The placement of the taniwha represents protection of and pride in family. The deer horn sits on a plaited flax mat and is mounted on Kaiawa river stone carved with entwined koru. The base is deer hide surrounded with plaited flax.

Kaiawa – Food from rivers and streams.

Koru – Symbolises the unfurled sliver fern leaf, depicting new beginnings, growth and harmony. It represents nurturing and when entwined with others, embodies the strength and purity of loving family relationships.

Taniwha – Mythical creature said to live in the oceans and inland waters of New Zealand. It represents protector and guardian of kinsmen and family.
