The taniwha is carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone) and is mounted on a solid pounamu base carved with a koru. The taniwha is facing forward and above the koru symbolising protection of family through life’s journey.
Koru – Symbolises the unfurled sliver fern leaf, depicting new beginnings, growth and harmony. It represents nurturing and when entwined with others, embodies the strength and purity of loving family relationships.
Taniwha – Mythical creature said to live in the oceans and inland waters of New Zealand. It represents protector and guardian of kinsmen and family.
