Door Of Pounamu- Tatau Pounamu
 

The taniwha are carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone) and represent protection of two families. They are positioned facing each other to form a doorway which symbolises lasting peace and the relationship between the families.

 

The taniwha sit on a pounamu mount which rests on a Kaiawa river stone carved with entwined koru.

 

Kaiawa – Food from rivers and streams.

 

Koru – Symbolises the unfurled sliver fern leaf, depicting new beginnings, growth and harmony. It represents nurturing and when entwined with others, embodies the strength and purity of loving family relationships.

 

Taniwha – Mythical creature said to live in the oceans and inland waters of New Zealand. It represents protector and guardian of kinsmen and family.
