Vision – Matakite
The taniwha is carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone) with a mother of pearl eye and rests within a mother of pearl shell from the pacific region. The reflection and light created within and through the shell symbolise the vision for the future.
The shell is mounted on Kaiawa river stone sculptured with entwined koru.
Kaiawa – Food from rivers and streams.
Koru – Symbolises the unfurled sliver fern leaf, depicting new beginnings, growth and harmony. It represents nurturing and when entwined with others, embodies the strength and purity of loving family relationships.
Taniwha – Mythical creature said to live in the oceans and inland waters of New Zealand. It represents protector and guardian of kinsmen and family.
