The manaia is carved from New Zealand pounamu with a paua shell eye and mounted on a textured pounamu base. The manaia is shown with the mouth open and a raised hand to symbolise speaking to the people about the necessity to value and protect our scarce resources.
Manaia – Carrier of supernatural power traditionally depicted with the head of a bird, the body of a man and the tail of a fish, representing sky, earth and sea and the balance between them. The manaia protects from evil.
