Restoring Identity - Whakahokia Tuakiri Ingoa
 

The mere carved from New Zealand pounamu represents the renewed sense of identity in life generally and within family specifically. It has mother of pearl set around the handle with a braided cord through it and sits on a stand made from deer antlers. The antlers are bound by hemp to Kaiawa river stone carved with entwined koru.

 
Kaiawa – Food from rivers and streams.

 

Koru – Symbolises the unfurled sliver fern leaf, depicting new beginnings, growth and harmony. It represents nurturing and when entwined with others, embodies the strength and purity of loving family relationships.

 

Mere/Patu/Waihaka - Club, symbolising the facing and overcoming of life’s challenges and difficulties. Pounamu mere are the main symbol of chieftainship.
