Basket Of Knowledge - Kete O Matauranga
 

The patu is carved from New Zealand jade with a leather braided cord through the handle and sits on a stand of Kaiawa river stone with a hemp base. The stone is carved with a tuatara set with jade eyes. Two deer horn at the front and a goat horn at the back represent the energy of earth and fire and are bound to the river stone with hemp, forming the basket of knowledge in which the patu rests.

 
Kaiawa – Food from rivers and streams.

 

Tuatara – Reptile native to New Zealand, Maori word meaning “peaks on the back”.

 

Patu/Waihaka – Club, symbolising the facing and overcoming of life’s

challenges and difficulties.
